COUNTDOWN: 4 Days
Boy have we been busy lately. It seems that since we're leaving soon for R&R, everyone is piling our plates high with stuff to do before we leave. Of course everything is due yesterday too! Yesterday was supposed to be our weekend, but I spent the whole day here. We got to work at 7am, worked till 10am..went on a tour (which I'll talk about in a bit), came back to work, and I worked till 7pm. Mike had to bring my gym clothes to work so I could make it to kickboxing. Fortunately, I got my work done JUST in time.
The tour we went on was of Believer's Palace. The tour is given every Friday by reservation only. It's a palace that was used by Saddam as camoflauge for the Nuclear Bunker he had built below it. This place was amazing. It was huge, airtight, and unaffected by the seven bunker busters they hit the palace with. The bunker had two separate areas so you could close off an area if it were penetrated. The doorways are all created at 90 degree angles of each other for protection from missles. The access doors are 3 tons each. The places is built so it cannot be flooded and has a massive filtration system so only clean air can be circulated throughout. It was set up so people enterring the bunker had to strip, take a shower, and dress in new clothes to prevent contaminating the bunker....There were huge kitchens, big sleeping areas, etc. We were told that it was once fully furnished but locals have slowly stripped the rooms of all furniture/fixtures, etc. This picture is the palace just above the bunker. You can see the destruction caused by the bombs. I'll have more pictures posted in my photo album if you're interested.
Well - back to doing that work thing. Oh yeah! Thought I'd mention - it is four days before my R&R that I would start to get sick. This is the first time I've been sick since getting to the IZ and now I am sneezing and blowing my nose much more often than I'd prefer. ARGH! ;) Thanks for listening!
